Thoughts on The Drifter

I ain’t got too much to say on this one. I found it because I love Crawl, another game by the same developer, and I bought it because it has the similar dark and gritty pixel art style. Writing about it is mostly me not wanting to forget that I had this experience, which was not an insignificant one.

It’s a classic point-and-click adventure game with an exciting plot, beautiful pixel art and really nice voice acting. I’m such a sucker for a good wholesome australian accent, and there are quite a few in this one. You play as Mick Carter, a down-on-his-luck vagabond with a troubles past. The game kicks of into high gear in the first few minutes and seldom lets of the gas. You really get to experience the life of a drifter; thinking everyone is out to get you, everything is a conspiracy and you deserve to be miserable. There are some pretty dark stuff, but most of it is handled really well.

You can’t really say much about the game without giving something away that is better to experience for yourself. There really aren’t any new game mechanics to speak off, this genre was invented and presented almost identically almost 40 years ago. Most everything novel about it is within the art and the story.

Gotta give props to Powerhoof, Crawl is one of my favourite couch co-op games of all time and this is a really solid adventure game. Hope that they continue to make awesome games.
